[Apollo 17 Lunar Roving Vehicle]

The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was an electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum of the Moon and to be capable of traversing the lunar surface, allowing the Apollo astronauts to extend the range of their surface extravehicular activities. Three LRVs were driven on the Moon, one on Apollo 15 by astronauts David Scott and Jim Irwin, one on Apollo 16 by John Young and Charles Duke, and one on Apollo 17 by Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt. Each rover was used on three traverses, one per day over the three day course of each mission. On Apollo 15 the LRV was driven a total of 27.8 km in 3 hours, 2 minutes of driving time. The longest single traverse was 12.5 km and the maximum range from the LM was 5.0 km. On Apollo 16 the vehicle traversed 26.7

India’s auto industry had to scale down operations March 23 onwards

Mayhem broke out last month after the sudden spike in Coronavirus cases in our country to control which the entire nation had to go under a lockdown starting March 24. Production started taking a hit almost a week before the lockdown when we started hearing about automakers scaling down operations and were completely stopped on the day of Janata Curfew on March 22. This took quite a toll on the production numbers for March 2020. While the overall industry witnessed a decline of 33.61 per cent at 14,47,345 units as compared to 21,80,203 units manufactured a year ago, production of passenger vehicles (PVs) slumped by 38.14

Cypress Acquisition Will Propel Infineon To Automotive Semiconductor Leadership In 2020 (NASDAQ:CY)

Sales of international combustion engine autos and electric vehicles will resume positive growth in 2021.

Although not the largest end-market for semiconductors, automotive has been one of the fastest growing. There are several reasons:

  • The increase in unit sales of autos as more safety and convenience features are added to a car
  • The increase in semiconductor content with each model of autos
  • The increase in semiconductor content in moving from conventional to EVs
  • The increase in semiconductor content with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

That was the thinking until early 2019 when the world economies were negatively impacted by the U.S.-China Trade issues, bringing many Asian and European countries to the brink of recession. The other shoe fell in 2020 with COVID-19. As a result, unit sales of conventional autos dropped and EV sales tumbled in China and the U.S. The COVID-19 pandemic also increased headwinds for ADAS. What happened this week was a plan by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to have a plan.

Simply put, the first generation of V2V systems would warn the driver but not take control of the car. Later implementations would improve to brake or steer around obstacles and eventually merge with self-driving cars. Here’s our rundown of V2V technologies and some of the implications…
