It’s called the Hellwagon, and it’s for sale.
In the automotive world, the term sleeper can mean different things to different people. At the end of the day, it all boils down to the same theme – a fast car that doesn’t look fast. However, this innocent-looking 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer could well be the purest definition of a sleeper you’ll ever find, and if you simply can’t resist its woody charm, it’s on the block with Mecum Auctions and will sell later in August.
What are you bidding on? The description for this Jeep is thin, but it’s listed as a 1989 Grand Wagoneer with 52,000 miles showing on the odometer. It’s reportedly a rare model with the red exterior/light tan interior combination, and if you know your Grand Wagoneer history, you’ll know this model came near the end of the run. Of course, it was never offered with a 707-horsepower supercharged V8, but that’s what makes this already-nice Wagoneer truly unique.

There are no details regarding the engine swap, but photos show the infamous 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 nestled under the hood and looking quite comfortable to boot. A 5.9-liter V8 was offered for the Grand Wagoneer back in the day, so the 6.2 is at least installed in something designed to accommodate a beefy engine. As for the rest of the Grand Wagoneer’s running gear, the auction listing doesn’t offer details.
Hellcat All The Things:
Scrolling through the photo gallery, however, we can see this classic SUV is the absolute definition of a sleeper. The wood grain sides, wheels, and factory badging looks as factory stock as you can get. We see a single exhaust pipe on the passenger side, and even the tires are blissfully adorned with whitewalls as you’d find on a proper 1980’s family car. There aren’t any clues to visually suggest this machine isn’t anything more than a mint condition SUV. That is, unless you see it mercilessly smoking those whitewalls into oblivion.
The Wagoneer Hellwagon is part of Mecum’s Kissimmee Summer Special 2020 auction, slated to run August 27-29. More photos and bidding information are available at the source link below.
