Downtown Huntsville Inc. introduced a new bike share program on Sept. 8, 2020.

Downtown Huntsville Inc. announced the relaunching of its bike share program that went into effect on Tuesday. The program has a new partner in Tandem Mobility along with partners Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and the city of Huntsville.

“We are excited to bring back bikeshare to Downtown Huntsville,” Downtown Huntsville Inc. President and CEO Chad Emerson said in the announcement. “Our city center is an amazing destination to explore on two wheels and this new partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and the City of Huntsville will allow locals and guests to do just that.”

“Sponsoring Downtown Blue Bikes is a perfect opportunity to help improve the health and wellness of Alabamians,” Tim Vines, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, said in the announcement. “Huntsville’s bike share program encourages healthy lifestyles and economic growth benefitting downtown businesses, residents and tourists.”

According to Downtown Huntsville Inc., there will be 30 bikes, across 11 stations in the downtown area. These stations include Big Spring East, Big Spring West, Butler Green, Five Points, Jefferson/Holmes, Lumberyard, Roundhouse, Twickenham Square, Visitor’s Center, Washington/Clinton and Westside Square. Bikes can be rented for $2 for 30 minutes.

“Bike sharing services have been highly popular with our residents and visitors and we are delighted this program will continue in the downtown area,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said in the announcement. “Cycling allows users to experience Huntsville in a unique way and it provides another mode of transportation that is clean and energy friendly. It also fits well in our Healthy Huntsville initiative to encourage daily forms of exercise. Our thanks to Tandem Mobility and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for improving our quality of life by offering new bike share opportunities.”

The bike share program can be accessed through the Movatic app found in the App or Google Play store by searching for “Huntsville.”
