A Topeka man is in custody following a vehicle pursuit early Thursday that began in southwest Shawnee County.
According to a news release from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, 49-year-old Thomas C. West Jr., of Topeka, was arrested and booked Thursday morning into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with multiple traffic- and drug-related charges, including possession of an opiate.
At approximately 2:15 a.m. Thursday, a sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a maroon Chevrolet pickup truck in the 7800 block of S.W. 61st Street. According to the sheriff’s office, the pickup began to slow down and then took off at a high rate of speed, heading north on S.W. Auburn Road.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver initiated a pursuit that continued into the City of Topeka, where Topeka Police Department officers assisted with the chase and successfully deployed spike strips on S.W. Gage Boulevard.
A sheriff’s deputy then performed a “controlled vehicle intervention maneuver,” which ended the pursuit.
West was arrested and transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections in connection with the aforementioned charges. He also had two outstanding felony warrants through Shawnee County, a misdemeanor warrant through the county and a misdemeanor warrant through the City of Topeka.
This incident remains under investigation.
