SEATTLE, WA — Washington State Patrol detectives are looking for witnesses who saw a crash involving a red Kia and an SPD bomb squad unit on Interstate 5 late Thursday night. WSP responded to a serious injury crash on northbound I-5, just north of South 200th Street, around 11:46 p.m.

Troopers said a red 2010 Kia Forte was driving north, when the driver lost control of the car, overcorrected and crossed three lanes of the freeway, hitting the guardrail. The car spun and came to rest facing east in the HOV lane.

According to investigators, a Seattle Police Department bomb squad truck — a black 2017 Ford F250 — was heading to an emergency call with lights activated when it made contact with the stopped Kia, hitting the car in the front. The second crash caused the Kia to rotate again and hit the guardrail. Troopers said the police truck also hit the guardrail and spun before coming to a stop.

The driver and three passengers inside the Kia were all taken to Harborview Medical Center, and three had serious injuries, WSP said. Troopers suspect the driver Kia’s driver was impaired, and that person is under investigation for vehicular assault. The police officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Detectives are seeking anyone — especially drivers with dashcams — who saw the collisions or what happened leading up to them, to contact detectives at 425-401-7746, or via e-mail.
